Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - A Tough Thing to Deal With

When you visit your doctor to know about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome he/she will probably ask you about your symptoms. He/she may examine you and ask you how you use your hands. Your doctor may also do these tests

  • Doctor may tap the inside of your wrist. You may feel pain or a sensation that feels like an electric shock.
  • Doctor may ask you to bend your wrist down for 1 minute to see if this causes symptoms.
  • Doctor may ask you to get a nerve conduction test or an electromyography (EMG) test to see whether the nerves and muscles in your arm and hand show the typical effects of carpal tunnel syndrome.

There are many ways to get temporary relief from carpal tunnel syndrome such as

  • Prop up your arm with pillows when you lie down.
  • Avoid overusing the affected hand.
  • Find a new way to use your hand by using a different tool.
  • Try to use the unaffected hand more often.
  • Avoid holding your wrists in a downward bent position for long periods of time.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can come on slowly or suddenly. For example consider an incident occurred to a guy suffering with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: When I got home, I had to take off the bandage to take a shower. It hurt like hell. After showering, I put the Ace Bandage back on, very lightly with very little pressure, and I realize that my hand did not have any pain in my wrist, and it was actually "setting" in place for recovery. So I used that hand as little as possible, but did not keep it elevated.

In some cases, surgery is needed to make the symptoms go away completely. The surgery involves cutting the ligament that may be pressing on your median nerve. You'll usually get back the normal use of your wrist and hand within a few weeks to a few months after surgery.

Doing the hand, wrist and finger exercises that your doctor tells you to do after surgery is very important. Without exercise, your wrist may get stiff and you may lose some use of your hand.

Things that may help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Lose weight if you're overweight.
  • Get treatment for any disease you have that may cause carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • If you do the same tasks over and over with your hands, try not to bend, extend or twist your hands for long periods of time.
  • Don't work with your arms too close or too far from your body.
  • Don't rest your wrists on hard surfaces for long periods of time.
  • Switch hands during work tasks.
  • Make sure the tools you use aren't too big for your hands.
  • Take regular breaks from repeated hand movements to give your hands and wrists time to rest.
  • Don't sit or stand in the same position all day.
  • If you use a keyboard a lot, adjust the height of your chair so that your forearms are level with your keyboard and you don't have to flex your wrists to type.

Arm falling alseep and wrist oddness?

Recently my sleeping arrangement as changed, i am not sleeping on a floor futon mattress. It is rather thick but since I starting sleeping this way i wake up in the mornings with my right arm, always the right arm, numb, like it has fallen asleep. Also, i have notice when i turn my wrist a certain way and dull pain as if two nerves have slipped over each other, thing like strumming a guitar, shoots up my arm. These both started around the same time. My arm is beginning to slightly fall asleep as i type or just sit as well. About the same time i have begun to ride a bike with daily frequency, not something i have ever done before. I ride approx. 3 miles a day back and forth to grad school. SHOULD I BE WORRIED ABOUT A HEART ATTACK? I am 33 but a bit overweight (6'0, 230) or is it the bed and if so what can i do to resolve it? massages? pillows? excercise? i have tried some but not all of these solutions. ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU

i would go to a doctor i'm not saying this is what you have because i'm not a medical professional but my boyfriend had that problem that his arm and hand would go numb at times or there would be pain his turned out to be scar tissue build up and carpel tunnel
