With the introduction of full 1080p sized TV's why do they still make wide screen format bluray/dvds?
I don't see the point in that anymore.
1.78:1, 1.85:1, 2.22:1, 2.35:1, 2.39:1, 2.40:1 - these are all widescreen formats.
If you're referring specifically to non-16:9 formats, you are seeing more of the picture that was shot.
If the movie was shot in scope (2.40:1) and you convert to 16:9 (1.78:1) you are now missing parts of the original film just for the sake of using all the pixels on your TV.
On a top of the line plasma (Panasonic VT25, Pioneer Kuro) or a fully LED-backlit LCD (Sony XBR8) the black bars should disappear in a dark room allowing for a cinematic experience. On lesser performing LCD sets you're never going to get anywhere near black bars and yes, this would be annoying.
However I'd rather see the full source than crop it to 16:9
