The Jets and the Steelers Go Green with Solar Energy and Recycling Program

The excitement of the NFL Playoffs is what keeps the bars filled and buffalo wing market thriving in January every year. Today at 6:30 ET, the New York Jets and the Pittsburgh Steelers will be facing off for the AFC Championship Title and a chance to play in the infamous Super Bowl, the ultimate showdown in American sporting events. But with all the pomp and circumstance displayed in American football, one begs the question so relevant these days: what are these football teams doing to help save the planet? To "go green?"

Well, as it turns out, both the Steelers and the Jets have both made big leaps forward in greening their respective franchises. Let's take a look at how these two football heavyweights have been helping to save the environment and conserve energy.

The New York Jets

In 2010, the New York Jets were in the spotlight with a highly ranked reality television series on HBO documenting their training season. The show, "Hard Knocks," was a ‘hit,' and in appealing to the masses, the team decided to up its eco-appeal by installing the largest photovoltaic panel installation in the NFL on top of their team headquarters in Florham Park, New Jersey. The 3,000 solar panels were installed in a collaboration between Syncharpha Capital, Evolution Energies LLC, Nautilus Solar Energy LLC and SunDurance Energy LLC, and the panels themselves were constructed by Chinese firm, Yingli Solar. The Jets paid no upfront costs for the panels and will buy energy as they go. The panels are estimated to provide upward of 750,000 kilowatt-hours of power per year.

The Pittsburgh Steelers

In December 2010, the Steelers teamed up with the Pennsylvania Resource Council and partners to collect recyclables at pre-game tailgate parties outside of Steelers' Heinz field. The initiative, called "Let's Tackle Recycling," is funded by the Alcoa foundation.

"Sporting events provide a great opportunity to reinforce the importance of recycling, and education is a key component of this campaign," said Dave Mazza, Regional Director of the Pennsylvania Resources Council.

Other teams in the NFL are starting to make small steps toward greening their franchises, and it's a step in the right direction for a market that reaches so many sports fans throughout the year. Now let's see who will clinch the title tonight!

How come white people always want to save energy?

i mean some of them say that they dont turn on heat or A/C because it saves energy who gives a damn about saving energy anyway, the earth will never run out of energy, as long as we are paying the gas and electric bill every month, we will always have the energy we need.

AM I RIGHT??

Because they are going Green and only use the A/C when necessary.

P.s I'm not White and I do that as well.
