Ensuring Audio Transcription quality
Audio transcripts using a single microphone
Our client decided to record their event, using a single microphone system. This is not normally an issue – microphones should provide clear recordings. However, the presentations, which were on a medical subject, were made in a room with a great deal of background noise.
Because only one microphone was available, one presenter tried to speak without a microphone for the first ten minutes of his presentation, and during the Q & A session, participants in the discussion did not use microphones either. The presenter was a non-native English speaker, which added to the difficulty.
In this situation, there is only so much a professional transcriber can do: some sections of the audio will be incomprehensible or inaudible. However, what the transcriber can do is go back over the audio, taking time and care, to ensure that absolutely everything that could be captured is captured.
Further, once the transcription had been completed, it can be passed to an experienced editor, who will check through the transcript while listening to the audio, not only correcting mistakes but also filling in a few gaps – it's surprising how much can be added when someone else listens to the audio with the initial transcript on the screen.
These processes, which we have in place at Global Lingo, deliver a vastly significant transcript to the one that would be produced by a busy secretary or bored staff member.
Transcribing where English is a second language
Our second client had recorded a series of interviews in an African country. Accents and manners of speaking presented a significant problem. We addressed this issue by passing on as much terminology and as many names as possible to our transcribers, as the transcripts were sent in and edited.
We also assigned two of our editors to work on the entire project, giving them an overview of the interviews; as they edited, they were able to pick up more and more as they became increasingly familiar with the case.
Professional audio transcription
Transcription might not seem particularly difficult; sometimes it isn't. But it's important to remember that professional transcription firms have the processes in place to cope with difficult audio and tight deadlines.
If either of these audio files had been transcribed by regular staff, within the demanding deadlines, it is likely that the client would have received transcripts that it would have found very difficult to use. By using our audio transcription services, on the other hand, they received transcripts that fully satisfied their needs.
