Choosing The Right Task Lighting For Your Home
In order to live a comfortable life in your home and be able to do more than sleep and get ready for work, you need to choose appropriate task lighting for each room. This means you need brighter lighting like fluorescents. T8 ballast or a functional replacement ballast for certain rooms. Other rooms will be better served with softer lighting and finally, there are certain spaces like the bathroom where you will want bright light that is as natural as possible. When lighting your home, it is important to consider the amount of natural light that gets in through the windows and then to consider what you will be doing in the room. It is also important to determine if you will need to change the level of lighting depending on what you are doing at any given moment in a space or if it needs to be changed throughout the day and night.
In areas of the home where you want to read, regardless of what else you will be doing in the space, make sure you have small, bright task lighting. Reading in light that is not bright enough strains your eyes and years of doing this will cause permanent, serious damage. Eyestrain can give you headaches and reading will lose its relaxation appeal in no time at all. In addition to bright task lighting for reading, it is also a good idea to include it in spaces where you write or fill in crossword puzzles.
Your kitchen needs to be very brightly lit for a variety of safety reasons. First, if you are going to be chopping, slicing and dicing foods, you need to be able to see everything in the cutting area. It is also important that you be able to see the ingredients while cooking, just in case something is labeled incorrectly or is unexpectedly spoiled when you remove it from the container. You also need to be able to see letters and numbers when reading directions, cooking times and temperatures and making measurements.
In your bedroom or sleeping space, you want to be able to darken the area. Dimmer lighting is a great for a bedroom because it allows you to see in certain situations, but still enables you to black out the light when it is time for sleeping. You may also want to have some task lighting near your bed if you like to read before falling asleep. Remember that natural light even that from the moon or streetlights can keep you awake at night, so consider installing black out shades in the bedroom to block out all light.
Finally, consider using dimmer switches in your dining and entertainment spaces. Sometimes you want to see exactly what you are eating, but once your meal is prepared and you know it is delicious, you can set the mood lighting and plan a romantic meal at home. This is especially great if you are entertaining because your guests will find the dimmed light soothing and conducive to quiet conversation and enjoying a relaxing meal.

Did a Light Bulb Go Off in Your Head?
Imagine 2 rooms, 1 with 3 switches & the other with 3 light bulbs. Each switch controls 1 of the light bulbs. However, b/c the light bulbs are in a different room, you can't see immediatly which switch controls which light bulb.
Your task is to figure out which switch controls which light bulb. You can spend as much time as you like in the room with the light switches, but eventually you must go into the room with the light bulbs. Once you enter the room with the light bulbs, you can't return to the other room with the light switches. After entering the room with the light bulbs, you have only 30 seconds to figure out which switch controls which light bulb.
How do you do it?
Turn on two switches.
Sing your favorite song.
Turn off one switch.
Go in the room.
One light is on, one light is off, but hot, one light is off and cold.
