Six Steps to Build Your Very Own Rustic Desk

Who could ever imagine that by combining rustic logs and twigs you could create such beautiful chic furniture?
A rustic desk is all the rage these days in corporate circles. The creative craftsmanship and the natural look which it exudes, make the rustic desk a favorite asset in your work area. Its aesthetic appeal can transform your clumsy desk into a luxurious office.
Most spacious office desks can cost you a fortune. Why pay a hefty cost for a piece of furniture when you could make your very own desk at home? Apart from excellent durability, a custom built rustic desk would provide you with ample space and storage facilities; all this and more for a fraction of the cost you would pay if you actually bought one. You don't have to be a skilled carpenter to construct your own rustic desk. All you need are some tools as most of the materials you buy from your supplier would be chipping in with some of the work. Once you're done gathering all the items, your rustic desk can be assembled in no time following the simple steps.
Step 1: It is essential to visualize what your work desk would eventually look like. You are looking at a large desk on top with one end secured to the wall. The other end would be resting on top of a two door filing cabinet.
Step 2: The next step would involve purchasing a two drawer filing cabinet. This would allow you to store your files while holding up one end of your rustic desk.
Step 3: Buy a laminated countertop for your new desk. You could find this in the kitchen remodeling section of a home improvement store. There is a wide array of countertops for you to choose from. Ask the salesperson specifically for a six feet countertop. As you are building a rustic desk, you would be better off with a plain interior door.
Step 4: Now proceed to place the file cabinet next to the wall, where you would eventually place your rustic desk. Using the top of the file cabinet as a guide, draw a line on the wall and move the cabinet away from it.
Step 5: Next you should secure the wood strip in such a way that the top of it runs parallel with the line you had drawn previously. Drill a couple of screws in to secure it.
Step 6: Finally rest one end of your desk onto the wood strip and the other end on the file cabinet. Use liquid nails or double sided tape to secure the top of your desk to the wood strip and file cabinet and voila! You now have your very own rustic desk.

The "roll" part of the desk is painted and needs stripping. How can I get the paint out of the tiny spaces?
You need to use paint stripper and apply generously. Then you can buy a small wire brush, at lowes, walmart or home depot, it looks like a metal toothbrush and brush gently with the grain. You will obviously get a lot of stripper and paint on the brush, use denatured alcohol to rinse the brush. Keep brushing with the metal brush and rinsing with the denatured alcohol....I used to refinish antiques which had intricate details. When you are done, use a paper towel to take off the residue....Good luck!
