No Frills Storage and You
Do not be fooled by "no frills storage" quite often it is apparent there are an unprecedented amount of hidden extras. High insurance fees, access fees, etc and so forth. When obtaining a quotation ask whether the company is VAT exempt, storage companies with static units have the option to be VAT exempt as you are simply renting space. Deep storage, also known as container storage is subject to VAT as it is considered mobile. VAT registered business's that are storing documents, stationary or business furniture may be able to claim the VAT back. However, storing under a personal basis you may have to pay current VAT on top, so look for the VAT exempt self storage companies, it may just save you a small fortune.
Verify if you can use your own household contents insurance, in addition to confirming if you are penalised for doing so. Reputable, family owned and run companies will offer great contents insurance based on per £1000 worth of value. This is not to say your belongings are at risk, it is just insurance. In order to provide insurance an operator will need to be FSA registered. FSA compliance means that an operator has sufficient training to provide advice and sell insurance products. Often an operator will use a third party specialist insurance company to provide insurance.
Make sure the only person with access to your unit is you. You can reinforce this by supplying your own padlock. It can be a key lock or combination & make sure you keep the key. Ask the storage staff what padlock size is suitable. Nothing too big as it may not fit the unit locking section. Self storage sites and units should be secure, supported by 24 hour Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) and have a fire alarm system that is monitored 24 hours a day. Storage in London sites are subject to strict Health and Safety guidelines, per se, fire alarms, smoke detectors and heat sensors are maintained and tested regularly. If you are unsure about fire risks in the site and correct maintenance, you may request to see the test sheet to ensure the company is adhering to legal obligations.
A deposit may be required as a surety, failure to pay one month does not mean your deposit will be used; it means you will charged more. In addition to this, enquire about notice to quit periods. Sometimes house moves can be un-predictable so ensure the storage company can accommodate you by offering flexibility with a rolling notice. "No frills storage" is often used by larger firms to seduce you into thinking they are cheaper than smaller rivals. Check the T&C's, you could be tied in for over a year. Therefore, it is best practice to actually read what you are about to sign. Do not feel rushed or pushed into signing something you are not sure about. The storage staff (if properly trained and informed) will explain all the terms to you. Self storage is really a quite simple process but take care with the small print. Do you have any tips for bicycle training?
Just took my road bike out of storage and had it tuned up. I've been commuting and riding short distances on an old, heavy bike (while I was living overseas), but haven't ridden more than 5-8 miles at a time in almost 2 years. How do I get strong again? How much should I push myself when I go out for rides?
Just ride at a comfortable pace and a reasonably flat route. Aim for a destination about 5 mile (8 km) away. This should take about an hour.
If you can do this most days you will pick up in strength and speed within a few weeks . You can then double your distance. Keep repeating this process until you reach the distance you are happy with. Then work on your speed and endurance.
The most important things are that you enjoy yourself and do it regularly. Riding to a regular destination (work, school, relatives, etc) is probably the best way to stick at it.
