Why a stenographer is ideal for depositions
In a legal situation where testimony is being deposed that pertains to a civil case such as business disagreements, contract disputes, property ownership and similar contests, it is absolutely essential that the information given by witnesses be rendered as accurately as possible.
Stenography is a transcription technique that enables practitioners to make highly accurate records of verbal communications during depositions. Lawyers, judges and other court officers are confident that stenographers will produce the most accurate records.
A stenographer will take down in shorthand what is being said. As well, a digital recording of the proceedings is used as a backup to the court reporter's notes. Depending on the skill level of the court reporter and the requirements of the litigants, transcripts can be delivered in "realtime" – that is, as the testimony is happening – or later, usually within 10 business days. Using both a trained shorthand reporter with appropriate backups ensures an excellent record every time.

what are my chances of being a court reporter with these skills?
im half mexican and half filipino and live in los angeles california if it means anything and i wanna give a shot at being a court reporter
i kno they use a special machine called a stenograph maching but i love typing i can hit over 60 gwam on a regular keyboard and i learned this over a year and learned touchkey in three months do any of you think id be able to learn stenography? or should i be able to hit 80 at least before i go to schooling for that? is it hard to learn? should i just go for something else?i basically would like any information or expiriences please =]
A stengraph machine is similar to a typewriter/keyboard only in that they have keys. In stenography, you don't type individual letters, but sylables or even whole words in just a few strokes that represent sounds, or "chords." A trained court reporter or closed captioner must write speeds of approximately 180, 200, and 225 words per minute at very high accuracy in the categories of literary, jury charge, and testimony, respectively. If you have an interest in stenography, you might as well get started on a course, your typing speed is irrelevant to learning or using the stenograph.
