So.. What do we know about the portion of the Milky Way beyond the Galactic center? (viewed from Sol/Earth)?
I've loads of pics of the super-condense star cluster at the center of the galaxy, and I know we are able to tell a bit about 'exogalactic' objects such as the LMC, SMC, M31, M33, and Sagittarius and other dSph, etc.. All thanks to the Hubble, really. We can even see the super-distant NGC's and Messiers outside of our local cluster, but what do we know of the other side of the Milky Way? Does the light from the galactic center obscure our view past it?
I downloaded Celestia and populated it with an extra 3 million stars or so, but the program does not render anything on the other half of our galaxy. Are there any resources that offer info on this area?
