Scout Patches Are An Integral Part of Scouting

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in the United States share the noble ideals of their counterpart organizations worldwide, including character development, personal fitness and citizenship training. Scouting organizations issue scout patches to recognize achievements. From Eagle Scout to the youngest Cub Scout, Girl Scout to Brownie, the patches are cherished keepsakes of accomplishment.

Merit badges and embroidered Scout patches are symbols that the boy or girl who earned them has successfully reached a distinctive personal goal. Scout patches are something that any Scout can proudly display to show their accomplishments.

Scout patches have existed since the founding of the Boy Scouts of America in 1910. Boy Scouts can earn merit badges in more than 100 categories, including areas such as journalism, American business, theater, woodworking, fly fishing, electronics and many others. Adult leaders can earn Scout patches too for completing their own training programs.

Girl Scouts also earn patches, badges and insignia based on their organization's activities and programs. Like their counterpart Boy Scout patches, Girl Scout patches can be earned as recognition of achievement.

Boys and girls earn Scout patches by working at their own pace in their chosen areas of interest. Once they complete the requirements for the Scout patches, which vary depending on the categories, they are awarded merit badges.

For some, collecting Scout patches is an enjoyable hobby. There are many sellers and traders of Scouting memorabilia of all kinds online. At least one claims the sales of collectible Scout patches are a multi-million dollar a year business. Collectors of Scouting memorabilia gather at "trade-o-rees" several times a year to trade patches among each other.

Collecting Scout patches is, for some traders, a way to recall the happy feeling of earning patches when they were young. It becomes a nostalgic trip to happy memories of youth. Serious collectors sometimes choose to collect "Order of the Arrow" patches. These Scout patches are issued by Scouting's honor society and are very rare and highly valued. In 2009, one such patch reportedly sold for $30,000.

Today's reputable custom patch providers use state of the art custom embroidered patch production equipment, can produce top quality Scout patches in vast quantities. Every detail of Scout patches can be reproduced clearly in a consistent, well-made design produced by high-precision computer-controlled embroidery machines.

Scout patches can be ordered with iron-on backing, or can be sewn directly onto uniforms. The iron-on backing makes it easier to install the Scout patches, and can provide extra durability when used to hold the patches in place for sewing. Patches can be applied using only the iron-on backing, but these will not be as durable as sewn-on patches.

In addition to Scout patches, quality patch companies today can produce many other custom designed patches. They often produce custom patches for firefighters, military units and police officers, for example. The patches that public service officers and military personnel wear every day as a routine part of their jobs are equal in quality to Scout patches.

No matter if they're for Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, the heritage of Scout patches continues a decades-long history. Any good provider of custom embroidered patches can supply top quality Scout patches at a reasonable cost and in a responsive, time-sensitive fashion.

Can I volunteer with the Boy Scouts as an assistant scout leader even if I don't have kids?

I'm 27 and a former boy scout. I do not have any kids. I loved scouting and feel that I have a lot to share and can really make an impact. Can I volunteer to be an assistant Scout master, or is that too creepy?

Its a little creepy.
