Pulling Off The Perfect Business Card
When it comes to designing marketing materials, the first thing that comes to mind is to create fancy designs. You would want your customers to notice you right away, so your instinct is to design overly attractive and flashy materials. The key though to effective marketing materials is to stick with the simple yet compelling designs. This is especially true when you are designing business cards. In fact, people are most likely to respond to a simple card that is easy to read than to a card that is elaborately designed but too difficult to understand.
In essence, your business card is the physical proof of the existence of your business. When handed to customers, they will be kept, put in databases, and in Rolodexes. These tiny cards actually serve as little billboards that remind your customers that you are open for business.
Because they are the first thing that people will often come in contact with you, it is crucial that your cards are well designed. Again, we are not talking about fancy and flashy designs here. We are referring to simple and classic designs that will communicate your contact details clearly and effectively.
When your customers look at your cards, what would you like them to see right away? Of course, you would want them to see your name, business name, mailing address, physical address, phone number, and email. All other details can be reserve to your other marketing materials. The goal of your cards is to tell your customers and prospects who you are, what you can offer them, and how they can contact you.
All those key details should be presented clearly, briefly, and direct to the point. Keep in mind that your customers do not have all day to determine how to contact you and know what you offer. From your business name alone, they should already know what you do. If your business name does not reflect your business, you can always put a tag line that briefly explains the nature of your business.
So, how do you ensure your customers and prospects get your contact details easily? That can be done by following the proper alignment and the contrast rule. Proper alignment refers to aligning your text to the left, right, or justified. As much as possible, it is important that you do not print your details at the center of your business card templates as this will only make your card look more cluttered.
In terms of contrast, this means the contrast in color you use. For instance, if you use a light font color, you can use a darker background or vice versa. There is also contrast in weight and size. You can use larger or bolder font on your key details to make sure they are easily seen. You can also use different colors in your name to make them more recognizable.
Remember that whatever way you design your cards, you need to be consistent in its look and appeal. Do not use too many fonts or a lot of colors in your cards. It is best to use just one or two colors and one font style to make your message readable, and use this in all your cards and marketing materials.
Simplicity sells, so even if you desire to create attractive and pleasing cards, make sure that it is able to present your message in the simplest and most legible manner.
