How does a retractable pen work?

Well, the easiest way to find out is to take one apart. Most retractable pens screw apart near the bottom, where the cushion is.
Anyways, if you take one apart you will notice several parts, I don't know the names, so I'll give generic names.
When you take it apart, you'll notice the ink tube with the actual pen attached to the bottom. It should be made of plastic, and be slightly flexible. Attached to the ink tube is a small spring, make sure you don't lose it or the pen will be broken. There will also be the pen case, the upper part and the lower part. Altogether, including the two halves of the pen case, the spring, and the ink tube, you should have 4 parts. You may have more depending on the particular model of pen.
If you have a pen that is clear at the top, it will be easier, but not necessary. If you look at the top of the button half, you will notice a kind of gear with slanted teeth and a pit between each tooth. When the pen is assembled and the button is pressed, the spring pushes the ink tube into the gear. When the pen is in(not ready to write) the ink tube is on one of the teeth. When the button is pressed, it rides along the slant and into one of the pits.
That's all I know about the retraction mechanism, I'll explain the writing mechanism next.
If you look closely at the bottom of the pen, you'll notice it is in the shape of small ball, hence the name "ball point pen". When the ball is slid across a surface, it rubs ink onto the paper(or skin, whatever surface your using). This is why a pen doesn't write sometimes, because the ball cannot slide.
