Slackers Beware, the Time Clocks, They Are a Changin’
You might recall that I wrote a top twenty list of jobs to aim for if you happen to be the type of person who was (not to put too fine a point on it) disinclined to put in a full day’s work. You know what I’m talking about, those primo positions where the punch clock is like a bogeyman; not really there, but something they tell stories about to scare the gullible kids. I had a lot of comments that day; some in support and a lot from upstanding folks who thought I was spreading the kind of nonsense that ruined Generation Y and is turning America into a nation of slackers. For those of you who don’t recall, here’s a recap of our Final Five Slacker Friendly Jobs from that top twenty list:
1. Real Estate Agent. Sell just enough houses to keep the boss off your back and spend the rest of the time sleeping in. They can track you down with your BlackBerry, but of course you’ll reply that you’re off showing a house halfway across the State. Who’s gonna check?
2. Ice Cream Cart Guy. Find a golden location in a busy park, put out an “honor system” sign and have a nap on a nearby park bench while kids pump your coffers full of quarters. You’d have to be a masochist to actually pedal one of those things- they’re heavy!
3. Any kind of self-directed installation guy. You know the positions: cable installation, checking gas meters, building inspectors, etc. As long as you answer the phone now and then to keep up appearances and put in a flurry of work when you have the energy, you can slack the rest of the time.
4. Remote call center operator. Customer service calls directed to your own home where you, in the comfort of your PJs, a brandy in hand, work the minimum hours needed to convince the supervisor bot that you’re online, alert and helping customers like crazy.
5. Those guys who pick up garbage along the side of the highway. Not the ones in the orange jumpsuits. You get dropped off in the morning, and then picked up ten miles away in the afternoon. Who knows where you were in between?
Turns out that it’s becoming harder than ever to escape the tyranny of the punch clock and time tracking, even for those remote positions. We’re starting to hear increasing reports of mobile apparatus for tracking time, with some models even incorporating biometric sensors to prevent tampering. Combined with state of the art time management software, these things are making slacking more work than it’s worth.
