Effective planning organization and unity, the only way forward for Haiti!
Having watched the level of devastation and destruction caused by the earthquake in Haiti, I could not help, but feel that had these buildings been constructed to a higher standard, the amount of damage suffered might have been far less, which would have also reduced dramatically the number of lives lost as well as the amount of displaced persons. Had this been the case, it would ensure a much quicker recovery for Haiti and its' people in the aftermath of this unprecedented disaster.
Haiti a constantly hurting nation!
Although the earthquake has brought a level of notoriety to this impoverish and destitute nation, Haiti has been ailing and suffering for centuries with many issues that go back as far as the years of Slavery and Colonial rule. This has resulted in Haiti becoming a very divided and suspicious society, steeped in black magic and other ills, none of which has helped the country's image in the eyes of the nations of the world. Leader after leader has come and gone, all promising to do better than the one before, however they have all failed the people in one way or another; by not keeping the glowing promises made prior to them ascending the leadership of the country.
Unity through consultations and dialogue!
It is very important therefore, that before the process of reconstruction begins in earnest and in order for a sense of unity to prevail, thereby giving the rebuilding process the foundation on which to succeed. That every effort be made by the multi-lateral lending agencies, donor nations, governmental and relief organizations, the Haitian government, its rich land owners, business men, civil society and representatives of the private citizenry, to meet and have serious consultations on the way forward. It would also be quite advantageous for a joint select committee of members of this grouping, be charged with the oversight of the entire re-building process, thereby assuring each group of proper representation of their views and opinions as this process unfolds.
Agreement and planning essential for success!
This committee along with the relevant agencies of the state would also be charged with ensuring the development of all necessary legislation and guide lines needed to properly and effectively govern the immediate re-construction process as well as the general re-development of the country and its national infrastructure. They would have responsibility for ensuring that a detailed study and evaluation is carried out to determine the type of building structure and design that is most suitable for the terrain and soil type in the various regions of Haiti, this, in light of the propensity for land slippage and mudslides due to deforestation and soil erosion during the rainy seasons.
They should pay special attention to the location of all sites selected for housing projects, especially those which are planned for hilly terrain or areas prone to flooding, with emphasis being placed on the type of construction materials to be used, all of which should be evaluated based on cost, suitability, availability, durability and longevity, in their efforts to minimize the impact of these natural disasters on the housing stock in the future.
Former US Presidents Clinton and Bush
It would be amiss not to suggest that the two international representatives former American Presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush take the lead in this endeavor in order that there is real transparency in the process. Once this committee has been selected and operational, it would allow the Former Presidents to return to their very important work with the international donor nations and organizations, in their efforts to drum up the financial support necessary to complete this massive undertaking.
Incorporating the people of Haiti in the process!
Bearing in mind the large number of persons displaced by this catastrophe! There is the immediate need, for housing solutions to be built expeditiously and in large numbers. To help in defraying the cost of this massive and expensive undertaking, able bodied Haitians should be encouraged to participate fully in the rebuilding process! These persons could be encouraged to work on government run projects or on their own accommodations with the cost of services rendered to the government, going towards offsetting the final cost of their own project, thus helping to reduce dramatically the cost of the reconstruction process. While this may seem cruel at first, it would certainly lend itself to persons making every effort to protect the property earmarked as their own, which would in turn reduce the level of wastage and theft normally associated with this type and size of undertaking.
Effective management and monitoring necessary for success!
This ideal could be achieved by properly organizing and managing the programme through accurate and detailed record keeping of all projects, backed by a comprehensive awareness campaign throughout the length and breadth of Haiti, in an effort to familiarize each citizen with the benefits to be derived from this approach to the re-construction process.
Penalty and punishment legislations!
No effort should be spared in the attempt to avoid abuse of this system; as such clear guidelines should be established regarding how this process should work, inclusive of the pricing process for each unit chosen by a participant. As such, every citizen who chooses to take advantage of this offer would be fully informed of the process involved, prior to approaching the relevant agency responsible for same. In addition, legislations should be enacted to ensure very stiff penalties against any organizations, companies and or individuals that violate any of these agreements! There should also be a system set up by the government to manage and properly monitor the carrying out of this plan as well as to arbitrate in any and all disputes arising from this noble venture.
Protection for the most vulnerable!
Special emphasis should also be placed, on the provision of housing and amenities for those most vulnerable among the Haitian population, such as abandon or orphaned children, the sick and shut-ins, as well as the elderly and the disabled individuals. These categories of persons would definitely not be required to be a part of any exchange for services programme, however, their need for housing and accommodations should be met as a matter of first priority. Finally, the government of Haiti and the powers that be, should do all that is within their power to protect the rights of all Haitians; but especially the ones that are most in need at this time!

- · Spending quality time caring, counseling, hanging out and sharing with my children and their friends! Watching my children grow from conception to the young adults that they are today, knowing that I continue to play a unique part in the moulding of these young lives for the future
- · Reading, studying and sharing the word of God with others, seeing their face light up as the scripture becomes clear and real to them and basking in the enlightenment and joy it brings! Helping people through whatever medium the Lord allows and seeing the joy it brings to them as their need are met!
- · Visiting a site earmarked for a construction project, doing the necessary checks including consulting with the client, then set about designing the type of building they require! Seeing their faces light up with a big smile as they view the completed building plans! But, more than anything else, hearing the laughter and feeling the joy they experience, when we hand them the keys to their completed home or project!
- · Working on my backyard farm and garden, including preparing the land, planting and caring for the crops; as well as reaping and sharing the harvest with my family, neighbors and friends!
- · Catering for and entertaining the persons who happen to visit my home! Holding a good party for a family member or throwing a surprise party for my friends!
