Leather Piano Benches - A Pianists Guide

Make sure the leather piano bench is fully padded and diamond tufted, this will prolong the life of the leather, making it more subtle and provide proper comfort and support. The adjustable mechanism should be made of hardened iron as daily usage will gradually wear away the worm thread if the steel is soft or not hardened. Routinely adding a light machine oil or silicone jelly to the worm thread will prolong life and make the adjustment mechanism smooth and easy to operate. Lightly apply the conditioner to a cotton cloth and brush lightly over the leather, remove access with a clean cloth this will prevent leather from cracking and preserve the life of genuine leather piano benches.
High quality leather benches usually have a finish of unpolished lacquer or high polished polyester. Using a cotton cloth dampened with water will usually remove light fingerprints or dirt residue from the finish. Many commercial polish or cleaners are available but do not use wax or oil based cleaners as they will gradually build a film of greasy residue on the finish. Light dust can be removed with a feather duster made of Ostrich feathers; this also works well on pianos, especially inside the case to remove light dust.
Periodically it may be necessary to tighten the leather piano benches' leg nut screws. You will need to place the piano bench with the padded top facing down. There is usually a flat washer and a lock washer with the nut, make sure the flat washer is against the bench brace, and the lock washer next to the nut, this will allow for the tightened nut to be locked firmly. If one of the legs seems longer than others, or the bench legs are not level to a flat floor surface it may be necessary to fit the legs properly to your floor surface. This is done by loosening all the screws slightly and then turning the bench back on its legs, applying some downward pressure over the leg that seem shorter so the legs are level, then you can turn the bench back over and do the final tightening.
