Helene Leane's Multi-layered Soulscapes at Agora Gallery
Chelsea's Agora Gallery will feature Australian artist, Helene Leane, in Out from Down Under & Beyond: Fine Art from Australia and New Zealand. The exhibition is scheduled to run from May 12, 2011 through June 1, 2011 (opening reception: Thursday, May 12, 2011).
About the Artist
Helene Leane's multilayered monotypes in gouache are a calming blend of texture, color and form imbued with a distinctly meditative quality. Working in a technique she has developed using gouache, stencil, rice paper and gelatin plate on 4 x 6" paper, each careful form is intricately woven into a larger composition whose full impact is slow to emerge. Through her skilful use of texture, line and pattern, Leane's tawny imprints suggest the markings of animals, a dulcet hymn, a craggy mountaintop or an impassive and shadowy landscape. Paroxysms of color and texture are seen through a sapient and frosty lens. These modestly sized works on paper function as storehouses of unconscious energy, the markings of Leane's own flourishing spiritual topography.
Helene Leane received her BA in Fine Art & History from the University of Sydney and her Master of Teaching in Mathematics from the University of Newcastle. She has a background in art therapy, and currently lives and works in Newcastle.
