Bands: Send a Personal Note With Your Friend Request on Myspace
When requesting new friends/potential fans on MySpace attach a small note. A note will personalize you to your potential audience. It will add a little bit of humanity that the internet has the unique ability of sucking away.
The most effective note we have used is:
“Hi,
Just wanted to invite you to our page to take a listen to my music. If you like what you hear we’d appreciate an add”.
It’s simple, straight to the point and adds that little bit of a personal touch that helps you stand out from the other 40 million bands on MySpace. The problem with most bands is they think they can just put up a page, add some music and the fans will come. It doesn't work that way. That "motus operandi" might work if you're building a casino or hospital but for music it is alot harder than that. "Build it and they will come" worked for the Romans but not in today's music world where the competition is tougher than ever. More bands are vieing for the public attention more than ever before. Do something that stands out from the rest. Be personal with your music and show your fans that you are not just another face on MySpace.
Look at it this way; you can send out 400 random requests on MySpace per day and recieve 10 replies if you're lucky. Or you can send 200 friend requests with a note and get 50 -100 replies directly to you. That's a 50% conversion rate. You now have an open dialog with your new fan and once you have that you have their support.

I found my great aunts autograph book from grammar school (1946). She had them both sign it. Frank personalized a note to her, thanking her for coming to see him at the Chicago Theater. Betty wished her luck always & signed her name. There's also an autograph of Bing Crosby that looks as though he signed a piece of paper that she glued onto one of the pages....
