Give That Old Leather Sofa a New Look With Leather Repairs
Are you in the same situation I was? Do you have that expensive and (at one time) nice looking leather or vinyl chair or sofa? Is it time to start thinking about what you are going to do with this worn, but well loved item? Keep it anyway? Do you want to try and fix it yourself or do you thing of getting it professionally fixed? These are the things I have been plagued with for a while now.
I have been thinking for a long time about what to do with this chair I absolutely love.
This leather chair came to me by my grandmother. It is over twenty years old, worn and cracked in places, and I can even see a tear here and there. My spouse continually tells me to get rid of it, but the problem is that every time I try to get rid of it, I just can?t seem to be able to do it. It just reminds me so much of my grandmother. This wonderful chair brings back a ton of memories.
This means that I only have two options here. I can send it to a professional to get it repaired, or I can try to fix it myself. Both methods have their own distinct advantages, but also its consequences, maybe that?s why the old chair hasn?t had any change in the last two years.
The Do it Yourself Options
There are do it yourself repair kits ? I went to look one of these up to see if I could do the leather or vinyl repair myself, and this is what I found. You can get them online and they come with instructions online, so you can read how difficult it is, before you actually start the project. The instructions read on as saying that the kits need to be used only if the tears are small and not very visible.
I glanced over at that old chair. Did I really think those tears were tiny and barely visible? Maybe in my dreams but I continued to read. ?The repair patch may not stick well with the leather, if the leather is old.? Hmmm was 20 years old? If I asked a 70 year old, I guess 20 years would be old. But maybe 20 years is a bit old for a chair. What if it didn?t bond, then where would I be?
The instructions went on to say that the use of the grain paper to the repaired area would make the new leather appear old. Would I be able to do these quick bonding jobs all over the chair? It might just look like a natural leather patchwork! But that?s not really the look I want!
The Professional Way! ? Nope! The do it yourself option is not for me, the only way for me to go is to get it professionally repaired. So I went ahead and called to find out how much it would cost, I was surprised at how low the cost was. It wasn't expensive at all. In fact, I would say I got a great price. This was it for me and it turned out beautifull.
So I suggest, if you have a vinyl or leather sofa and need to have it repaired, you should get it professionally repaired. don't just keep that old look, and don't decide that it now has an antique finish. That was my way out. In the end my chair ended up being professionally fixed and looks great. It is now ready for another 20 years!
