How to house train a dog?
I adopted a 1 1/2 yr old poodle mix from a shelter the previous owner left a note with the dog saying he was "mostly" housetrained,he stayed outside most of the day and in a crate at night. He doesn't respond to commands like "out" etc. 50% of the time when taken out he just stands there. If anyone has any suggestion it would be apperciated.
We haven't gotten a crate i wanted to try without one,at what point should they be crate broke? All great advice and thats what i have been doing so maybe i just need to be patient and things will work out.
Timing, consistency, using your crate and BRIBERY are what we recommend for housebreaking your dog. Feed your dog at regular times every day, take your dog out 30 minutes after feeding, always to the same spot, use your command (go potty, pee-pee, etc.), when your dog eliminates per your request, PRAISE, PRAISE....and treat. We call them goody-goody, and the dogs will want that treat, and to please you as well. IF they don't eliminate on command, put him back in the crate and try again in 30 minutes. He will quickly learn to "go", outside, and getting the treat is a bonus. Take him out first thing in the morning, 30 minutes after feeds, after a good play-time session, immediately after naps, and 30 minutes before bedtime. Good luck
