Organizing Closets with The Finger A Memo Pad Holder
Most of us will admit that our clothes closets eventually get so stuffed we can't find things, and we find ourselves frequently pushing aside items we no longer wear. It's also disappointing to pull something out and find it's too wrinkled to wear, or you find the item you want on the floor of the closet, too dusty to wear. When this happens, it's time to re-organize.
The first thing to do is sort your clothes. Have a clean, empty box handy. Pull out the items you no longer wear and think about why you've been skipping over them. If you can honestly say that you'll never wear an item again, and it doesn't need laundering, put it in the box. If it's not in good enough condition to donate, just throw it away. Wash anything that needs it as soon as you can and add them to the box. After you're done, make a list of the contents and donate them to a reputable charity. Get a receipt for the donations and attach it to your list - this will give you a non-cash charitable deduction for your next income tax return. There are guides on the Internet to help you place a value on your donated items.
Next, organize the clothes that are left. It makes sense to hang long items like dresses and suits on one side, and short items on the other. Keep blouses or shirts together, pants together, skirts together, etc. You can even group things by color if you like, and some people like to hang blouses or shirts together by sleeve length. If your closet is the kind that has one long rod across it, you might be able to save space by hanging short items in two rows. By attaching a second closet rod that hangs from the fixed one, you can hang double the clothes in the same space. For instance, you can hang blouses or shirts on the upper rod, and skirts and pants on the lower rod. The type of pants hanger that holds the pants folded over a padded bar works well here.
If you don't need to hang your short items in two rows, then the space below them can be used for a shoe rack or cabinet, or rolling storage carts with drawers. These are available in dozens of sizes and styles and you can use them to organize things that should not be hung on hangers, like sweaters, and smaller items like socks, hats and gloves, scarves, etc. Save even more space by hanging light items on the back of the closet door.
