Peace009 – When do you think did the Israelites start using their present lunisolar calendar?
The Jews are presently using a lunisolar calendar, i.e. a calendar with 29 or 30 days in a month based on the moon’s rotation around the earth with an extra month being inserted or intercalated in seven of the 19-year Metonic cycle in order to align the months to their proper season. When the Israelites left Egypt, they did not know about this kind of calendar.
What kind of calendar did they use while in the wilderness of the Sinai Peninsula for 40 years? Was it a purely lunar calendar, i.e. without any intercalation, with 354 or 355 days in one year? What was the purpose of such calendar? Until when did they use this type of calendar?
When did they learn about the lunisolar calendar? And from whom?
The world is presently using a solar calendar based on a 365-1/4 day cycle of the earth around the sun. A leap day is inserted every four years except if the century year is divisible by 400.
In the Lunar Calendar the holidays rotate, as the year shifts back by eleven days. Muslims use this Calendar, and Jews used to have this calendar until after the capture to Babylon, when the more "advanced" solar calendar was considered to be incorporated, but I am not hundred percent sure of this. It is more advanced as it takes someone to keep track of the days and notice the shadows etc.
Many cultures in the World (such as the American Indians) primarily used the Lunar Calendar as the months happen right on the sky, and in a subtle way the Lord Almighty has kept the days, months and weeks written on the skies through the Sun and the Moon. Thus the age of a person would be remembered by so many "moons", from which the word month has derived perhaps? Thus a ten year old boy by the lunar years would be called 120 moons old.
The advantage of the lunar calendar in Islam for example allows the fasting season or pilgrimage time comes in different seaons in 33 year cycles. The other advantage of the lunar calendar is both the Northern and Southern hemisphere get to share the holiday seasons taking turns. The fasting season falls in summer when the days are longer and thirst is intense, wheras in winters it is not as difficult. Thus in December when things are cold in the Northern hemisphere, it is hot in the Southern hemisphere and vice versa in March and distributes the seaons more justly.
Ancient pagan systems usually moved with the seasons. Thus harvest festivals could only be celebrated in the harvest season. However, when the entire globe is considered, it is interesting to note that these seaons differ for one part of the globe to the other. Christmas in Australia is always hot and they would never have a "white Christmas".
This divides humanity. Whereas lunar calendar shares the seasons with all people, and there is justice in it.
When the Luni-Solar calendar was adopted, the months are shifted so that the holidays fall approximately in the same season at least in and around Jerusalem. This change perhaps took place after the influences of the Persian/Babylonian influences on Judaism. Thus we see Persian influences in Hebrew, whereas this is completely missing in Arabic.
