Braces - how much $$?
I live in Monterey, CA and I am wondering if orthos are charging so much because of where I live. My son is 12, 7th grade and 2 orthos estimated $6500 for his braces!
Also, a family friend is a dentist. He did his daughters braces. He thinks the whole ortho industry is a sham. Says he would take $2k and wait until my kid has stopped growing.
Braces cost between $5500-7500 depending on the case and location. As far as a general dentist doing braces, they do not have the extra 3 years of school (that whats makes them an orthodontist)
I work in an orthodontists office, and I have seen too many cases that were started by general dentists and we had to redo, also many lawsuits over mistreating patients, they take out teeth, when not needed to get the teeth to fit, then when we get the messed up case we can not put the teeth back. The bottom line is you want someone who is trained to do it right the first time, would you go to you general doctor for heart surgery? Probably not, even though it is legal for him/her to do the surgery, I would want someone who has special training who does this all day long, every day to do it right. Remember you get what you pay for.
