The Dangers of Printing on Both Sides of the Page
Many home and small office printers do not have the ability to print on both sides of the page. Whilst it saving paper (and ultimately, trees) is an admirable quest, printing on both sides of the page with a printer that does not have that feature (called duplex printing) can be costly and waste more printer ink, cartridges and toner than single sided printing (called simplex printing).
Visualise the process of a laser printer. Paper feeds in, toner is magnetized to the drum (according to the message the computer sends it), toner is rolled onto the paper and the paper feeds through belts and rollers to the fuser unit which melts the toner to the page. A printed piece of paper feeds through more rollers and belts out of the printer.
If you turn the paper over and print on the other side with a non-duplex-ready printer, when the paper gets to the fuser unit it heats the toner on BOTH SIDES of the page. Melted toner can then be deposited onto the rollers throughout the printer. Printed pages that have ghosted images or words or streaks on following pages mean that the whole project can be a waste. If the problem is bad enough you may need to then replace the printer.
The process of heating a piece of paper can cause also the paper to curl slightly on the edges. Printing essentially changes the composition of the paper. Non-duplex machines can often get jammed with paper that has already been printed on. Removing a paper jam is time consuming and distracting, and can often damage the printer or toner or printer ink cartridge, especially if the paper tears and a piece gets left behind. Damage to the sensitive drum or fiddly rollers also occurs when paper jams are not removed carefully.
Similarly, the problem exists with inkjet printers. Ink takes longer to dry than toner, and streaks of wet ink on the printer rollers can cause streaks and lines on the following pages, causing and unprofessional result and wastage.
If you are looking to buy a new laser or ink printer, and you would like to print on both sides of the page, most brands of printers use the letter D in their model number to indicate that the printer is a duplex-ready printer. A duplex printer has a roller and belt path that eliminates ghosting and streaking on the paper.
You may wish to check if the printer is a manual or automatic duplex. Manual means you will need to turn the pages over yourself and feed them back into the printer paper tray when instructed by the printer. An automatic duplex printer has a mechanism inside that turns and feeds the paper back into the printer without human intervention.

Why won't my fuser unit fit into my Lexmark E240?
Bought a new fuser unit for my Lexmark E240, but it won't fit properly. The top of the fuser unit is slight higher and flared than the old one and my roller guide won't fit on top of it. I talked with Lexmark support and they say the unit should be compatible. What's going on? Anyone got any ideas?
I know how to install a fuser unit, the problem is the plastic on top of the fuser unit is a different shape than the one that came with the printer.....i can put it in but when i go to reinstall the exit guide, the exit guide won't fit. So....i ended up swapping the plastics from my old fuser with the new one. Crazy...i don't understand why the new fuser was shaped different.....but still supposedly compatible. Oh well. All's well that ends well.
