How a groom chooses a wedding ring
Choosing a wedding ring
Over the last few decades it has become increasingly popular for men to wear wedding rings (aka wedding bands). Go back a few generations and you would have rarely seen a man wearing a ‘wedding band'; now-a-days though it's almost frowned upon if a man does not wear one. Most couples now tend to split the bill when it comes to buying a ring but it's not unheard of for a man to foot the bill … and it can be some bill!
Wedding rings come in a whole range of colours, metals and designs so what considerations should you bear in mind when buying a wedding ring.
1) Choosing the metal and stone
Traditionally the choice of metal (gold, platinum etc) is dictated by the engagement ring you bought her. Indeed the grooms ring will also reflect this decision. The most popular metals are ‘white gold' (helps complement silver jewellery), ‘yellow gold' (14 – 18 carat is the most robust to go for a lifetimes worth of wear and tear) and ‘platinum' (rarer than gold and more expensive, no carat system is used) and ‘titanium'' (brings a modern grey look to the ring). You can also now find rings in rarer golds such as ‘rose gold' and ‘two colour gold'.
It's becoming increasingly popular for couples to opt for a jewel stone set into their wedding ring. If you do go down this route it's advisable to go for a hard stone such as diamond, topaz or emerald to put up with a life time's worth of use.
2) Choosing the shape of the ring
Again the shape of the brides wedding ring should have resemblance to her engagement ring. There are a number of styles to choose from such as straight-edged to curved styles. Rounded-edged wedding rings have a gently curved style for a traditional look, high domed wedding rings have a more pronounced curve whilst flat wedding rings have square edges giving a more modern look.
3) Choosing the size of the ring
Jewellers use a grade system from A – Z to measure the ring sizes are graded from A to Z (A being the smallest); with most people falling somewhere between an H and a U. As a rule of thumb a perfectly fitted ring will not move on your finger if your hand is turned upside down. However, you should be able to remove the ring easily by twisting it over your knuckle.
4) Buying your wedding ring
Once you've made up your mind on all the above (and have the necessary finances) it's time to buy the rings. One should allowing at least eight weeks for the creation of the ring, especially if you are having it engraved. If the rings are not going to be ready in time some jewellers will provide a ‘loaner' ring.
There are numerous jewellers both online and on the high street who sell high quality wedding rings such as Goldsmiths (we've given you some example wedding rings below) and H Samuels. Remember at the end of the day 1) you pay for what you get with jewellery and 2) make sure you are both happy with the choices made.
