Having Fun with Negatives and Slides
There are several advantages to scanning film and slides. Slides or a negative is the original image while a print is a copy. Slide and negatives have a greater dynamic range that can be achieved by scanning prints of a photo. When a photo is printed some tonal range is lost. The information can't be recovered from the print. Scanning film produces noticeably better output then scanning prints. This is especially true if you plan on enlarging the photo.
Did you know that color slides are superior to color negatives? Density range is the difference between the minimum and the maximum tonal values. That the film can register. Dynamic range is measured in a d-max number that has a max theoretical value. A negative color film had much less density range then slides. Slides can have a greater range of colors or tones than color negative film can. It doesn't matter if you use color negatives or positives since both have a much greater dynamic range then color prints.
When scanning slides and negatives you have three choices, you have dedicated film scanner, transparency adapter on flatbed scanner or slide copier.
If film photographer and scanning negatives or sliders is something you like to do on a continuing basis you need a film scanner with digital ice technology. If you have a digital camera and have ton of slides and negatives to digital I would still recommend the dedicated film scanner. If your film scanning need is occasional you should look at a good photo flatbed scanner with transparency adapter. Flatbed scanner can produce sums excellent scans.
Color sliders and negatives attract dirt and debris. Which can take hours to remove in a photo editing program? Using a scanner with digital Ice technology that will automatically removes the dirt and restores the photo. Time takes its toll on the color of your photo and color slides as dyes fade. Science fiction Ice3 technology cleans scratches restores color and removes grain within your photo. Digital Ice works with in a scanner to automatically remove surface defects such as dust and scratches from scanned images. The digital ice automatically enables the film scanner to correct for these defects without degrading the photo.
Digital ROC automatically restores original colors to faded slides and negatives. It read the dye in the color for negatives and slides and restores color if your slides or negatives are faded this program does an excellent job restoring the color. Digital gem reduces the image grain caused by the film emulsion. Digital gem automatically enhance the clarity of a scanned film images while preserving it color, gradations and sharpness digital gem analyzes a film unique grain pattern pixel by pixel. It removes all data related to the image quality, color and sharpness and removes the grain from the scanned record of the image that will give you a good improved image.
Film has two faces to tell the emulsion side of film from the base side. You need to know one side from the anther side it is necessary for proper scanning and cleaning. Hold the film up to the light and rotate it slightly. When the light hits the base side of the film it will bounce off brightly at the base side of the film. The emulsion is the dull side and has less gloss or shine to it .when light is reflected off it .The base of the film will be shinier than its emulsion. Another way to tell emulsion from base is to hold up a short piece of film and look at its curl. The emulsion side of the film will be on the inside of the curl. Negatives and slides are always handled by their edges to avoid getting dirty. Scan color negatives is different from scanning positive slides color negatives onto regular photo paper. The orange masking makes scanning color negatives difficult without special software. Color negatives requires that image be inverted just like black and white film negatives But color negatives requires that orange mask color be removed by balancing it out. Is my thrift store fax machine toast? Makes crackling sound when I send?
The HP 1250 makes a nice copier, so it would be nice if the fax worked, but the phone connection makes crackling sounds & the fax doesn't go thru, while my ancient Brother fax machine sends fine on the same line & cord (I don't like the printing film, that's why I prefer the HP). It has a 2 line connections. Is there some work-around I can try? Noise filter maybe?
A noise filter will not solve this problem.
The crackling sounds are probably due to a bad connection.
Finding the fault may take some serious effort, because there are
several different parts in different places that could be causing it.
I would look at these points, and, depending on
what I found, I might look at others:
>The line connections, to see that the contacts are
not corroded and that they are not bent out of shape.
>The relay that acts as a hook switch for the phone line
when a fax is sent or received.
>The connections between the various circuit boards
(if the phone line wiring goes to more than one of them).
The noise problem may be why the machine was donated to the thrift store...
