Light & Large Executive Jets Manufacturered By Embraer,New Airport & Airlines Plan Joint Fuel Purchasing
Embraer a Brazilian manufacturing company with the light jets Phenom 100 and Phenom 300-with the slogan:"Made in the USA" and the large executive jet recently opened the Melbourne International Airpor,Melbourne,Florida,of its first US-based factory, aviation observers wondering whether,Embraer,will be marketing its phenom range of light jets to be built there.
Will Phenom Jets Be Stamped "Made In The USA"?
The plan to build the 8000-square foot (7432 square metre) assembly hangar and paint shop plant for Phenom business jets was originally announced shortly after the Phenom 300 prototype started flying in May 2008.
The new hangar and modern paint shop facility is dedicated to the executive jet business in the company's largest market, where it will begin operations with the production of the Phenom 100 entry level executive jet. About 200 people will work there. The company will also conduct flight testing and do delivery preparation at the Melbourne facility.
A second construction phase for the company's customer centre has already begun. At this facility, customers will be able to design the interiors of their Phenom, Legacy and Lineage executive jets with the use of high-end 3D visualization technology, supported by a showroom with a vast collection of interior finishing materials. It is scheduled to be completed by the time Embraer delivers the first Phenom 100 assembled at the facility in the fourth quarter of this year.
Full production, about eight aircraft a month, should occur sometime next year. The new plant is designed to build up to 100 entry-level jets a year. The plan is to build a single aircraft in expansion, but Embraer has the land and Melbourne has the skilled workforce to support that expansion. Last Year, Embraer produced and delivered 126 Phenom jets.
Another US Factory?
Embraer may not be finished building US factories, it was learned last month. The company has announced that it would partner with Sierra Nevada to assemble Super Tucano light attack aircraft in Jacksonville, Florida, if it wins a $ 950-million contract with the USA Air Force.
It is competing with Hawker Beech crafts AT-6 for the contract, which will initially supply about 35 single-engine turboprops capable of carrying a wide variety of weapons, including precision guided stores.
If it does win the contract Embraer will renovate an existing 3800 square metre (41000-square-foot) hangar in Jacksonville at a cost of $3, 8-million.Embraer met with city and state officials on February 6 to discuss the proposal.
FAA Ticket For Legacy 650
Embraers Legacy 650 large executive jet has received certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) after earlier having received certification from Brazils ANAC (National Civil Aviation Agency) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
The Legacy 650 is an extended-range derivative of the successful Legacy 600 jet, which has logged nearly 200 deliveries worldwide. The new jet has achieved all of its performance targets, particularly the maximum range of 3900 nautical miles (with four passengers and NBAA IFR reserves included) without compromising either payload capacity or operational costs.
The Legacy 650 offers the same comfortable and functional three cabin zones interior as the Legacy 600, as well as the largest in-flight accessible baggage compartment of its class.
Both jets also incorporate state-of-the art insulation materials for improved noise levels and Inmarsats Swift Broadband system for high-speed in-flight Internet connections, as well as Honeywell's new Primus Elite avionics suite.
The Legacy 650 and the Legacy 600 share important qualities with the ERJ 145 regional jet platform, including low fuel consumption, reduced operating costs, ease of maintenance and dispatch reliability.
Embraer claims that these modern executive jets are not only less expensive to operate than aircraft with similar cabin sizes, but actually cost the same as aircraft with only two cabin zones.
Legacy 650 deliveries began in November 2010, with seven already in operation.
New Airport For Khartoum
The Sudanese Government has awarded a $1, 21-billion contract to a Chinese company to build a new international airport, capable of accommodating the Airbus A380, near Omdurman, 40km south of the capital, Khartoum.
The China Harbour Engineering Company, a subsidiary of the state-owned China Communications Construction Company, will undertake the construction of the new airports runway, airline terminals, control towers and other key facilities.
But the deal with Sudan comes at a time when airlines are considering cutting back operations because of the currency restrictions that prevent them repatriating their profits. The airlines are constrained because of local laws that prevent selling tickets to Sudanese nationals in foreign currency.
Airlines Plan Joint Fuel Purchasing
As the price of Brent Crude oil continues to rise, African airlines have started to work out possible schemes for the joint purchase of aviation fuel.
The secretary general of the African Airlines Association, Dr. Elijah Chingosho, said that the move which would lead to the establishment of a joint aviation fuel supply was being expeditiously pursued by the operators.
A Statement by the continents airline body quoted Chingosho as saying that it needed to "realign the association's activities to the current imperatives of African airlines."He said airline route network rationalization, joint fuel purchase, commercial cooperation and training would be vigorously pursued by AFRAA.
To check soaring cost of operations, Chingosho said that AFRAA would also tackle the issues of high taxes and charges by service providers and monopoly of handling companies at some African airports with the view to addressing them. With the approval of the executive committee, the association would roll out a number of specific projects designed to offer tangible benefits to the airlines.
The move came just as the prices of oil recently broke through the $100 a barrel level for the first time in over two years, following political turmoil in the Middle East.
Airlines globally are increasingly adding fuel surcharge fees to the price of tickets to cope with fluctuating oil prices, which makes it hard for them to honour ticket prices for more than a month ahead. Fuel accounts for one-third of the airlines operating cost and is the second-highest expense next to labour.
