Rounded Business Cards Stand OUT!
I just bought two sets of the exact same business cards. That is, aside from one small variation.
One set was just your typical stack of business cards.
The other set, was virtually identical. But with rounded corners.
This might seem like a small, inconsequential difference that wouldn't really matter much. Not so.
Rounded business cards offer your recipients a completely different experience.
- The cards look unique.
- They feel different.
- And yes, they generate a different reaction when you distribute them.
How come?
Because different... stands out.
It's that simple.
Nine times out of 10 when a prospect is handed a business card, they are given the traditional (shall we say) "pointy" edge variety. Now, it may be a small or subtle difference, but the rounded corners provide enough uniquness that people will look at your business card for a longer period of time. They'll run their fingers along the rounded edge.
To get the maximum response from your business card, it needs to be an engagement tool.
That is… something that pulls people in. Something that essentially forces them to mentally process what it is they're looking at. (Believe it or not, a recent study actually confirmed that a vast majority of business cards are hardly looked at before they're put away, because they didn't engage the recipient enough or make enough of an impression.)
Therefore, whatever you can do to make people look at - or remember - your card for a longer period of time is worth considering.
Now, is getting rounded corners for your business cards a guaranteed way to make them responsive? On it's own... of course not. But it's a great start.

Ask yourself...
What other unique business card material or shape promises the same flexibility that rounded corners provide? Some shapes limit the amount of space you have to fit your content, call to action, or graphics. Some materials make it impossible to use the back side of the card completely (which I find is a perfect opportunity to transform what would otherwise be just a plain old contact card into an effective and memorable ad).
Plus, Other unique card varieties are very time-consuming to get set up.
Not so with rounded corner business cards!
In fact, on some websites, adding rounded corners is as easy as clicking a box (see the link below).
And generally, it's just a few extra dollars.
Compared to other things you can do to have your cards stand out (such as get metal ones, or emboss them, or choose a clever die-cut shape, or hire an expensive graphic designer) rounded corners are quite cost effective! They offer a lot of bang for your buck!

Best consistency for piping round the edge of cake?
I have normal icing sugar and royal icing sugar - can anyone tell me which one and the best consistency to use for piping? Although I try to make it stiff it still seems to all gel together!

Do not use royal icing for piping around a cake (shells, etc). Royal hardens, and is better for icing cookies or for intricate designs that you would later lay atop a cake.
Stiffen up your regular decorator icing. Use a mixer to be sure it's all incorporated. As an example, here's a great recipe for decorator icing, and it tells you how to stiffen it for piping, or thin it for spreading.
SNOW WHITE BUTTERCREAM ICING
This buttercream icing has an ideal consistency for frosting cakes. It has a firm quality making it good for wedding cake decorations and flat surface or flower nail flowers. Air dry decorations for 24 hours.
2/3 cup water
4 tablespoons meringue powder
12 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
1-1/4 cups shortening
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring
1/2 teaspoon clear vanilla flavoring
1/4 teaspoon butter flavoring
Combine water and meringue powder; whip at high speed until peaks form. Add 4 cups of sugar, one cup at a time, beating after each addition at low speed. Alternately add shortening and remainder of sugar. Add salt and flavorings; beat at low speed until smooth.
YIELD: 7 cups icing. Recipe may be doubled or cut in half; however, if cut in half, yield is only 2½ cups.
