what does a dual channel operation mean? it is mentioned that a laptop has to be 4GB In order for the dual channel to function properly,
so why dual channel function is needed?
Dual channel memory results to higher memory bandwidth. Main purpose is to debottleneck the memory controller, thus resulting to better PC performance.

For dual channel memory to work you just need two RAM modules. Old chipsets need a MATCHED PAIR of RAM modules for dual channel to work. Current Intel chipsets support "Flex Memory" technology. Even unmatched pair of RAM will work in dual channel mode to a certain extent.
So, even 2x512MB or 2x1GB will work on older laptops where the chipset supports dual channel. 1x1GB plus 1x2Gb will still work in dual channel mode on current Intel chipsets.
But do take note that there are older chipsets or processors that are just capable of single channel mode even if you put a matched pair of RAM.
