Visconti Pens – A Step Above
There are ballpoint pens – and then, there is the Visconti ballpoint pen. Comparing Visconti pens with the Made-In-China product you find at the local Wal*Mart for $1.99 a dozen is like comparing a new Ferrari with a second-hand Yugo.
Each and every Visconti ballpoint is painstakingly manufactured by hand, the traditional way, in a 15th-Century villa located in Firienze (Florence), Italy – home of the Italian Renaissance as well as historic geniuses such as Dante Alleghieri and Leonardo Da Vinci. It was another, latter-day Dante, Signore Del Vecchio, who established the company with his partner, Luigi Poli, back in 1989. The company's flagship product, the Visconti ballpoint, is made with a combination of Old World craftsmanship and modern technology and materials. The mission of Visconti Pens from the beginning has been to produce a writing instrument that is aesthetically pleasing, durable, and environmentally friendly. The heart of these ballpoint pens is celluloid. This is a modern material derived from organic sources, not petroleum. Celluloid is also resistant to breakage and is available in a wide variety of colors.
Finding celluloid for the manufacture of Visconti pens posed unique challenges, as artificially-cheap petroleum and the political and economic machinations of the petroleum industry had caused many sources if this material to literally dry up. Part of the rebirth of celluloid manufacture was due to Signore Del Vecchio's love of history and archaelogy; like a real-life Indiana Jones, Del Vecchio delved into the study of dated industrial technology. Eventually, the manufacture of celluloid for the Visconti ballpoint pen was reborn on a large scale.
