SPAIN -"Imagical"…or picture perfect

TWO IMAGES OF Spain spring to mind and linger there, making the blood race.

The first centres around the bullfight, that extraordinary spectacle of a solitary man confronting a raging beast in a barren arena in front thousands of people. The image of a single, smartly-attired matador standing face-to-face with hundreds of pounds of lethal animal. There is no need to have been to a bullfight, or even to approve of bullfights, to appreciate the emotion generated by the event. To feel the sun blazing down on the aficionados in the stands in the huge open-topped Plaza de Toros; to see the black-clad matador hoist his red cape; to hear the thundering hooves of the bull pounding the ground. Ole! Ole!

Then there is an equally moving but much more serene image centred around the spectacle of the flamenco! For this, the stage may be as grand as the ballroom of a five-star hotel or as simple as the floor of a local tapas bar. Either way the effect is always powerful.

The lights go down, a guitar comes to life and the magnificently dressed dancers begin to weave their magic, their upper bodies held still, their arms moving gracefully, their legs working feverishly, and their heels creating exhilarating rhythms.

These two images suggest all anyone needs to appreciate the charm of Spain today. Together they convey the country's love of colour and passion, tradition and enjoyment, daring and artistry. But these two images are only a hint at Spain's magical diversity. Two other images conjure up a very different picture.

The first concern the siesta, that daily reminder that Spain is southern country and blessed with so much sunshine and warmth that everyone feels the need of a few hours of respite during the afternoon. What a charming notion that is! A siesta. How easy it is to sense the stillness of a hot, crystal-bright afternoon, to see the curtains blowing gently in the breeze; to savour the dark, refreshing coolness indoors.

This is the perfect time to reflect that Spaniards recognise there should be some relief from work every day.

An adjunct of the siesta, and just as inspiring, is the Spanish attitude to dining. The tendency to linger over lunch until late in the afternoon and over dinner until way past midnight, as if to say that good food and good company are, if anything, even more important, to a full life, than rest.

The second new image is of Spain as a leading economic force, a country that has transformed itself from a somewhat backward, agrarian-based, society into one thriving on industry and services. Siesta or not, Spain gets the job done. This is obvious in the sleek buildings that line the streets in Madrid, Barcelona and other large cities. It is also obvious in most specific achievements, such as the successful operation of such recent global events as the Barcelona Olympics and the World Exposition in Seville

Bullfight, flamenco, siesta, and industry – these give a reasonable picture of Spain. But other images convey so much more.

Equally symbolic is the country's coastline, which makes Spain one of the word's greatest destinations for sea and sand getaways. This coast is so long and varied that it is almost impossible to realise just how rich a choice it include. In fact, Spain's beaches stretch for hundreds of miles, from the Costa Brava, north of Barcelona, southwards past Valencia and Alicante to Malaga and Marbella on the Costa del Sol, and along the northern, Atlantic, coastline featuring Santander and San Sebastian, and the offer literally hundreds of resort settings. Not content with this cornucopia, Spain has the audacity to offer the Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca as well. Trendy Ibiza's outrageous street-life is complemented by neighbouring Formentera's more rustic charms. Mallorca combines the Mediterranean ambience of Palma and its bustling bay-side tourist allure with the ageless Spanish charms, architecture and landscapes of the north and east which have seduced everyone from Habsburg archdukes to George Sand and Chopin. Menorca is a better bet for away-from-it-all resort relaxation. Further afield, 70 Atlantic miles off the coast of Southern Morocco, the Canary Islands, offer intriguing possibilities for sun-seekers and nature lovers alike. Each of the archipelago's seven volcanic islands has its own distinctive personality. Some boast lush tropical vegetation, poinsettias as tall as trees and dense banana plantations while others offer arid moonscapes of lava rock and sand dunes. At 12, 198 ft, Mt. Teide, Spain's highest mountain, is snow-capped for several months every year. And the islands feature six national parks and dozens of other environmentally-protected zones.

Tenerife's tourism allure is dominated by the sprawling south coast resort of Playa de las Americas but places like the provincial capital of Santa Cruz still evoke the islands' entrancing heritage. Similarly, Gran Canaria offers the combination of southerly resorts and, in the central highlands, a rich evocation of rural Spanish life. The capital Las Palmas is a vibrant Spanish city with an intriguing old quarter. Lanzarote's stark volcanic landscapes are softened by traditional green-and-white low-rise architecture and some highly attractive beaches.

But despite being extraordinarily blessed with beaches, Spain might just as easily be represented by another, very contradictory image: culture. One only has to recall the names of a new of Spain's leading painters, from El Greco, Velasquez and Goyta to Dali, to get a glimmer of what the country has to offer in the way of culture. Or to reflect on its equally impressive architecture, from the enchanting Moorish palaces and gardens of the Alhambra in Granada to the mind-boggling Art Nouveau creations of Antonio Gaudi in Barcelona.

Fortunately there's no need to travel very far to experience the truly amazing diversities Spain has to offer. Barcelona makes this point graphically. It is indisputably one of the leading big cities of the world. It has outstanding luxury hotels, excellent shopping, fascinating historical districts, great restaurants and exciting nightlife. But, reflecting the dual nature of Spain, Barcelona is also one of the world's great seaside resorts. It is a city. There is a similar broad dimension to many of Spain's main resorts, these resorts have a sophisticated element, boasting hotels with luxurious, restaurants serving the ultimate in local Spanish cuisine and easy access to such important destinations as Cordoba and Ronda.

Even Madrid follows this pattern. Situated inland, far away from Spain's beaches, it is primarily admired for the quality of its shopping, its grand boulevards and non-stop night life, but it provides some surprising alternatives to urban life. For instance, one of its greatest attractions is the Casa del Campo, a 4,000-acre area of heath and woodland replete with an amusement park and zoo, and it is only a short distance away from a host of smaller but world famous jewels such as Toledo, Segovia, Aranjuez, and Escorial. Then there's spectacularly historic Sevilla and the creative powerhouse of Valencia, Spain's third-largest city.

It also offers bullfighting, flamenco, and la siesta. Ole!

There are many chemicals used in making paper. Probably not a good idea to continue chewing it. It is possible that over time certain toxins could build up in your body and cause problems.
