Buddha Shakyamuni Arrived Already Enlightened: Destined to be a World Teacher
Many Buddhist traditions contend that the Buddha was already enlightened in previous lives, and in the traditional manner, he did have an internal awakening, and sought to wake up. He wanted to know the truth, and so he left his life of ease. After many years of intense effort, he had the great awakening beyond the state of a learner Bodhisattva. How marvelous it would be to become enlightened for the first time, a learner Bodhisattva, but Buddha Shakyamuni had already awakened in many previous lives. What he did in this last life was wake up to the tremendous responsibility of a world teacher, and for that he had to be very big.
There is an enlightened alert state on the outside while still able to remain in reality alignment inside that is a sign of a great teacher rather than a hermit practitioner. He grew bigger inside without becoming diminished on the outside. The tremendous emergence into the activities of a world teacher caused the Buddha to enter into a new relationship with the world and all of the inhabitants of this world in a way that was vitalizing for the all living beings.
After teaching for many decades, The Awakened Buddha became so amazingly skillful that not only was he a world teacher, but many of his students began living lineages. There were many who became like world teachers themselves and they could not do that unless the living root was very strong, isn't that so? However, Sangha is not the same as Buddha, but another important aspect of refuge that models the success of the Path to the awakened state. The Buddha's enlightened students were the example Sangha, community of enlightened beings, who after receiving extraordinary transmission and teachings, became objects of refuge themselves.
