Determining the radius of curvature from thrown baseball?
The initial velocity of the baseball is 100 m/s at an angle of 30 degrees from the horizontal. I need to find the radius of curvature right after it is released and at the apex.
I figure out the horizontal component Vx= 86.63 m/s and the vertical component Vy= 50 m/s
I have the equation a= ((v^2)/p) + v where p is the radius of curvature.
I am having difficulty taking this problem further because the equations in our book are not very clear. Is there a simple equation for radius of curvature in terms of velocity or tangential acceleration?
Guidance would be appreciated!
In terms of velocity and CENTRIPETAL acceleration...yes.
Do realize that any acceleration perpendicular to velocity causes it to take a curved path.
So, for this reason, you need to extract the component of acceleration which is perpendicular to velocity, and incorperate it with velocity.
a_cent = v^2/r
Solve for r, the radius of curvature:
r = v^2/a_cent
Now, how to get a_cent out of a_net and the angle between v and a_net...?
One way to return a perpendicular component is to use sine.
Hence:
a_cent = a_net * sin(theta)
Thus, we update:
r = v^2/(a_net*sin(theta))
In the sitation of a free projectile, the acceleration is only that due to gravity, and is hence equal to g, and directed downward.
Hence:
r = v^2/(g*sin(theta))
Our angle theta measures v relative to downward. If our equation returns a negative result, just ignore the fact that it is negative.
At point of release, theta0 = 120 degrees...WHY? Because we are measuring it from downward, rather than the given value measured from horizontal.
At vertex, theta_top = 90 degrees, fully perpendicular to vertical because its velocity is horizontal.
At point of release, v = the initial speed they give you, v0.
At vertex, v = vx. Expressing in terms of theta0 and v0, it is vx = v0*sin(theta0).
Hence:
r0 = v0^2/(g*sin(theta0))
rtop = (v0*sin(theta0))^2/(g*sin(theta_top)), and it simplifies to:
rtop = (v0*sin(theta0))^2/g
Data:
theta0:=30 deg; v0:=100 m/s; g:=9.8 m/s^2;
Results:
r0 = 1178 meters
rtop = 765.3 meters
So, what does it physically imply? Or rather geometrically imply?
